Demographic Factors in the New Retirement

Advances in various fields of medicine, coupled with a newfound appreciation for personal fitness have been molding us into a stronger and healthier society.

Naturally, longer life expectancy means more years spent in retirement. And due to the demographic effect of the baby boom, the next generation of retirees will, over the next 25 years, become disproportionate to the working population.

It's not only the time spent in retirement that is being reshaped, but the nature of that time. The baby boomers are the same generation that culturally standardized higher education, health and fitness awareness, dual-income households and later-life parenthood. This healthier and highly ambitious generation is less inclined to accept that their extended retirement period must be synonymous with slowing down. They want to use their opportunities and physical wellbeing to engage with society on meaningful levels, both personally and professionally.
